Learning deeper through physical experience

Metaphor is an inherent learning strategy; we naturally transfer meaning from one field to another. However, only MAE consciously uses the body as a metaphor for a range of scientific, strategic and ethical understandings. Because somatic experience is so powerful, what is understood by the body,"embodied", affects every aspect of a practitioner's life.

For example, if a student learns the idea of leverage in a text book, the understanding will be only intellectual and not easily applied to different areas of life. However, if leverage is understood through the physical application of a lock and practiced repeatedly the idea becomes incorporated; its understanding true and range of application physical learninglimitless.

Martial art concepts such such as distancing, flanking, leverage, structure etc, now have personal significance and older students enjoy hearing how these concepts were extended and employed in ancient battles such as Cannae, Thermopylae & Pharsalus and they often investigate other application of these concepts on their own initiative.

When children learn in the physical sphere how necessary cooperative and harmonious behaviour is for tphysical learninghe effective learning and execution of complex techniques, that somatic learning is easily extended to the social sphere and should this learning take place in an environment of respect and trust it will be even more profoundly understood.

All physical activities, from dance to football, which if practised for a long period of time will have a profound affect on the practitioner's personality, character and abilities. But only MAE consciously applies this concept to create happy, loving and powerful people.
